really liked it

A fascinating, but painful book as hope is dashed again and again for the residents of the Dust Bowl region of the Plains. It was a timely read during this period of credit overextension, bank failures, and an unreliable economy. The first few chapters felt choppy as Egan jumps between various families and locations, but eventually I felt satisfied in tracking the experiences of several families whose common factor was that they stayed put while many others left (Grapes of Wrath). Egan finds plenty of blame to go around in one of the worst largely manmade disasters of all time. To say they "survived" lends a triumph to their ordeals that is largely lacking in the painful losses they endured.
