I have to admit, I listened to this title as a book on tape and it started out fairly slowly. However, the story of two mismatched boys becoming friends and their unlikely story of having to find eggs for an NKVD commander began to draw me in. As the go out on their quest they meet cannibals, partisans, and , of course, Nazis. The picture the author paints of a wartime "Piter" [Leningrad:] and the surrounding countryside was fascinating. So much so that I ordered another non-fiction book on the topic. If you decide to read this book stay with it, I think you'll be pleased.
