I give this book 2 and a half stars. It's not terrible, but I felt like it dragged at times, and it's pretty much a soap opera. That in itself isn't necessarily a problem, but it didn't propel me along--and shouldn't a good juicy soap opera do that? So I guess at times this is one of those soap operas that is stalling and stretching things out. That this book inspired Mad Men--especially the first season of Mad Men--is obvious. Maybe if it were 1955 when I read this I would have been gripped the whole time as I was reading, but for me, here in 2011, Mad Men takes this kind of material and these kinds of characters and makes them and their stories more compelling.
