Another book selected at random from the library shelves. It was entertaining, but the plot is a little far-fetched, and the writing was a bit stilted/formulaic for me. However, it was still interesting to get a glimpse into what life was like for Florentines during and after the reign of the Medici, and a lot of the historical material is based on actual events. (The main plot is completely invented, however.)

Also, I just couldn't buy into the concept that Mona Lisa is beautiful. The author includes an afterword that mentions how the portrait suffers from having discolored and having been retouched by well-meaning artists over the centuries, and she notes that over the period of time when she wrote the book, she had a fine-quality print of the portrait in her office and came to see how beautiful this woman really was.....but I just don't see it......
