I never thought I'd read anything by Scott, but in researching Shetland pirates, I came across this. The style's digressive and urbane, and I like it a lot already. It's certainly not a challenging read, but it is interesting.

I'm reading the digitized 1872 edition on Google Books here.

Larry-bob Roberts He's one of those writers who are the the Authors deck, but whose work most people have never read. I certainly haven't. See Alison Bechdel's mention of playing Authors in Fun Home.

Gloss Yes, exactly! I think I further discounted Scott because I associated him with pseudo-historical romances like Ivanhoe. Now I'm not so sure there's anything wrong with that genre. :)
