The Suicide of Virgins, by Jeffrey Eugenides, narrated by Nick Landrum, produced by Recorded Books, downloaded from audible.com.

This book won awards, I understand. It isn’t as good as “Middlesex” though. In this book we have a little town, an entirely dysfunctional family with five very depressed daughters, and a group of boys who are endlessly watching them and trying to think of ways to rescue them, although they don’t know from what. Ultimately, the five girls kill themselves. This isn’t a spoiler as we know all the way through that this ultimately will happen. There are laugh-out-loud moments, but I mostly found this book depressing and hard to read. But I persevered to the end. It wasn’t clear to me how the boys got the material they had in order to continue their investigation of the girls, as it were, like a journal, etc. In my opinion, there were a lot of empty spaces there.
