I wouldn't really call this a fantasy, although that's how it's marketed. True, it's set in an imagined world, but it's very derivative of the Greco-Roman world. It has elements of the numinous, but they are relatively few. It's really an adventure/quest story, and its strength is in the story telling. The pace is lively, and supports both the main plot line and some interesting sub-plots. I also like the characters who, while mostly recognizable types, are well-defined and interesting. I don't think I'm giving anything away by saying that while the ending is not exactly a cliff hanger, there is a strong incentive to continue with the sequel; an aspect of the book that I found somewhat disappointing.
