This was an interesting book that dealt with several deep issues concerning war, race, and finding your place. I would say this book would be best for older teens as there is lots of bad language, the death, and the fact that a lot of the military terms used would either have to be looked up or have an interest for the teen. The ending was a little "blah" with the purple hearts but all in all it was an interesting look into what was going on during the Vietnam War. I am not sure that teens would be able to identify with the characters just because of the situation, but it is... interesting.
