Lin is a man running from his criminal past to India. Searching for anonymity and meaning, Lin finds love, friends and understanding in this adventurous story. From running a clinic in the slums of Bombay, to a hiatus in a poor rural village, to working for a crime boss in Bombay's underworld, this story forces readers to participate and like Lin, cannot help but grow to love the heart of India.

Admittedly, I have attempted several times to read this book over the past 5 years. Reading this story is similar to vistiting India for the first time; at first you are disgusted and uncomfortable with the strangeness of the country. Bit by bit you let your barriers down and somehow, without you knowing it, India (and this story) has burrowed into your heart. Though the prose can be awkward and cliched at times, Robert's first novel is an epic read.
