There is a reason this book won the Newberry.

Gaiman's imagination is working furiously as we read about the life of Nobody "Bod" Owens. Bod is an orphan who is adopted by a lovely couple with many traditional family values who were never able to have children of their own. The only hitch is - they're dead.

Given the "freedom on the graveyard" as a baby, Bod can move in and out of the crypts and graves of his adoptive neighborhood, and learns many of the skills of the shades that inhabit it. As time goes on, he and his guardian also learn more about why Bod is an orphan at all.
