The 1st installment in Dee Carney’s Close to the Heat series ONCE BURNED is a short and quick read. It gave enough background to understand what had happened to Darien and Pepper and why they are at such odds with each other even though they try to deny their feelings.

Ten years ago Darien Priest was a young and stupid kid that broken his best friend Pepper’s heart. He loved her even then but living in the South he succumbed to the pressure of what his friends and family would think of him dating a black girl, instead of standing up for her and he turned his back on her.

Now competing in a Food Truck Show competition for ten thousand dollars Darien and Pepper have been thrust together not just as competitors but also having to team up in close quarters. Darien is determined to show Pepper he is not the kid he was 10 years ago. Pepper will do whatever it takes to win the prize money. When she gives him sugar instead of salt Darien has to wonder if it was an accident or deliberate?

Working hard during the day they have together Darien does all he can to convince Pepper not just with words but with actions his feelings for her are real. There was a lot of cooking going on between Darien and Pepper unfortunately not between the sheets the one time they were together was fast and frenzied and back to the stove they went.

When Pepper finds out Darien thinks she would do something like cheat she is hurt, again. However, when it comes down to her and Darien in the finals she has to trust him enough if she wants to win more than just the ten thousand but also Darien’s heart as well.

For a novella Dee Carney did a great job. Her characters are strong and the story well written. I look forward to the next installment.
