Hmmm... The story and most of the plot are actually pretty good. And I like quite a few of the characters. The problem is the main character; who's actually two characters for most of the trilogy. About halfway through the first book, the main character is magically split so that only part of him is in the 'real' world.
And yes, my complaint about the second book (that the main character is whiner who doesn't take any responsibility for his actions) was a plot device; part of the split in the main character. It could have been put to better use. I didn't think it was satisfactorily resolved.
The worst disappointment? I've read stuff by Robin Hobb (and Megan Lindbloom, her alter ego) that I just couldn't put down. There were some good ideas here. I kept reading, waiting for them to come to fruition, and they never did. The first book in this trilogy had promise. I really liked it, and I wanted to like the others. Too bad.
