This is about all you’d need at White Sands. There aren’t many hiking trails and it is not a place you will go wondering off on your own. The few trails that exist are constantly monitored by the park service because the dunes continually shift. Trails don’t last long. The missile range is all around the park—which is another good reason not to wander off. My favorite time to visit the park is in the winter after a snowfall (happens now and again). The snow blending with the sand is totally disorienting. It’s a bizarre and wonderful place. I’d say—skip this book because the park brochure is good enough.
