This book is begging to be our next pick for book club. I've been dying to discuss this one with a group of my favorite gals!

I'm surprised how well I liked this book due to the fact that the two main characters Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney at times were incredibly self-centered. Frank in particular was often so egotistical that I found it hard to find likable qualities in his character at all. That being said they were extremely interesting people, that I felt drawn to and at times was even sympathetic to their plight. The author did a great job at presenting the controversial choices the characters made without judgment. Therefore, as a reader it really allowed me to have a constant internal dialogue going about what I felt about their situation. I don't want to give too much away, but as a mom of three young children it was hard for me to get past Mamah leaving her kids for so long. But, it certainly made me think about what motivated her to do so.

The themes in this book gave me so much to chew on. The issues surrounding women at the time were fascinating. I really enjoyed the exchanges Mamah had with the other female characters in the book. I also was captivated by the section dealing with organic architecture.

I finished this a couple of days ago, but Frank and Mamah keep following me around.

Read this so we can talk!

Erin, I'll call you in a few days on your Birthday so we can chat about this one. I may not be able to wait until then. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

MCOH Sounds fascinating! It doesn't surprise me that FLW was self-centered; wasn't he supposed to be the inspiration for the main character in the Fountainhead?

I'm looking forward to this one. Thanks for the recommendation!

Jen Would love to read it! Do you have a copy I can borrow?

MCOH I just finished. Whoa. I was so not expecting that ending.

Lisa Nelson The ending was shocking for me as well. From reading up on the subject I knew there was a fire, but I did not hear anything about all the other parts of the ending. Let's get together soon!

Jen I gotta say, I found it unbelievable that she could stay away from her children. I also couldn't believe how likable her character was in spite of that...

Lisa Nelson Agreed...One second I would be heartbroken thinking of her kids who needed her so desperately, then pages later would be utterly charmed by her.
