My friend Jen (who stopped posting on goodreads when she had a baby, which is both unfortunate and understandable) said in her review that this book gave her the creeps, but she couldn't stop reading.

I think that's about right. Cormac McCarthy's tale of a father and son who travel south in a post-apocalyptic world is at once totally disturbing, kind of unbelievable, and completely impossible to put down. I've read enough speculative fiction and doomsday non-fiction in my lifetime to fuel hours of daydreams -- What would I do if I could never go to a grocery store again? What if my water supply is poisoned? I might even have an old Y2K SURVIVAL GUIDE in the basement somewhere.

But, reading THE ROAD made me face the difficult truth: I would be killed and eaten in a world like the one McCarthy describes, and so would pretty much everyone I know.
