Classic Iris Johansen, Dark Summer starts off with a fast-paced flurry of activity rapidly introducing us to Devon Brady and Jude Marrock. Devon Brady is a veterinarian whose heart of gold shines through in spite of a troubled past and this innate kindness draws Jude Marrock to her for help when his dog Ned is shot. Reluctantly Jude is forced to pull Devon into a mind-bending chase while trying to protect and save a miracle that was entrusted to him years ago. During this cat-and-mouse pursuit, Jude and Devon are discovering a bond forming between them which leads to an inevitable romance. My problem with the romance is with Devon. While Jude is a dark and lusting character, Devon seems to pale in comparison and her attempts to match Jude are lacking. Her character is supposed to be strong but she often comes off as an stubborn child. The supporting cast of Dark Summer are what gives the plot the substance it needs. Devon's ex-husband Lester draws distain, Jude's accomplice Bridget is an enigma and the dog's caretakers are an exquisite group of different personalities. As we discover how special the dogs requiring protection are, we see how unique the caretakers are and when we have reached the climax of this discovery, Dark Summer comes to a stunning conclusion. Iris Johansen has begun to master the element of surprise and her dalliance into the world of the paranormal has been incredible. Alluding to characters from previous novels (including Pandora's Daughter), Johansen leaves the door open for storylines to tie together and I am hoping that we will see a series comes out of these books!
