Geraldine Brooks tale of the storied history of the Sarajevo Haggadah was compelling. I most enjoyed reading about how the book changed hands and withstood censorship, burning and religious intolerance over its 500 year history. My favorite period of its history was the creation of the illustrations.

I liked the forensic study of the book leading to the passages back in time. It was almost dreamlike. The science gave some clues about the possible travels of the book, then the reader was transported back in time to see what really happened. My main drawback with the novel was the character of Hanna. I never really liked her. Her relationships seemed too contrived, and her mother seemed more of a caricature of a bad mother.

I gave the book 3-1/2 stars, but I would have rated it higher if Hanna's modern story seemed more believable.
