A sublime short story. On a day I read two (see also: The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, by Mark Twain) both of which were fantastic - this piece of escapist fantasy (quite literally an account of a man who invokes fantastical mind wanderings to get away from the mundanity of his own life) is a joy.

Creating ridiculous - but authentic sounding - language to detail five flights of fancy on a day of buying household supplies and driving his wife to appointments, it is easy to empathise with the downtrodden hero. Walter Mitty is undefeated. Read this.
