Amazing to see the evolution of a master of the English language (and ESLR master at that!). There were a few real gems in this, and a few that droned on a bit. I can't say that many of them compare to his novels like Pnin or Pale Fire, and when read in large chunks, some of the repetition gets tiresome. I'm all for writing what you know, but how many Russian emigrés and pince-nez can one read about?
