The high school English teacher who assigned this to me said that if you don't like holden Caulfield it's because you are Holden. I'm still not sure what that means, especially since at the time I didn't like Holden. The grim picture Sallinger paints of what it means to find oneself is beyond unique. Images of chess games, train rides and hookers have stayed with me for years. Holden's state of being says so much about the world in which he tried to discover himself.
