Blech. This gets two stars for the approximately seven new anecdotes/bits of trivia in it, but boy was it an irritating book. Maybe moreso because people told me over and over how much I would like it, and because I have definitely heard Sarah Vowell be more insightful on NPR.

The entire time I read this book, all I could think was that I should be a published author. And I don't even write. It was just so trite, so conversational, so whatever-the-opposite-of-groundbreaking-is. At least her nephew sounds cute.

If I seem unnecessarily upset, it's because I also got The Wordy Shipmates for Christmas. Hopefully the fact that I know less about that period will make me resent Vowell's half-assed historianism less.
