This book is an incredible achievement. It seamlessly weaves narrative history with the personal intimate histories of individuals and families, showing how the larger historical events impacted Russian citizens. Densely written but never boring or difficult to get through, it is both captivating and heartbreaking, as most histories of the Soviet era tend to be.
