This book interested me because after reading "The Peabody Sisters," I wanted to learn more about the sisters and the people in their circle. I did learn more about their lives but I had higher hopes from the book after listening to an engaging discussion with the author on NPR this past spring. I also found "The Peabody Sisters" to be so well written that I was disapointed to find this text to not be as detailed or to be written with such focus. I think the background knowledge I had from "The Peabody Sisters" enhanced my experience with the book. I think I would have found more holes if I hadn't read that book first. I also didn't appreciate the author's side stories and references to current fiction. In general, the book itself seemed to be only a quick glimpse into these lives and the time period rather than an extensive picture of these years and people.
