Read in January, 1999

One of the great works of Western Literature, and yet hardly anyone reads it. While the rest of Europe was busy writing long poems about silly knights, Iceland wrote the first modern "novels", the íslendingursögur. A tragic epic spanning generations, Njals saga is understated and intensely human, while at the same time action-packed and, at times, quite funny.
