The Associate by John Grisham

Read in February, 2009

I was so disappointed in Grisham's latest work. He took more than half the book to create this wonderfully detailed plot and then three chapters to close the book. Three chapters in which he untwisted some of the elements of the plot, didn't resolve anything, and quit to early. I felt so unfulfilled at the end.

It kills me that his latest books haven't been up to par with his earlier works. In the beginning, his books were well-crafted and well-executed. After he began seeing his books turn into movies, they became a little fluffier but he eventually returned with The Street Lawyer and The Broker. But alas, we are back to the fluff and I'm sad to say that he is falling in my list of fav authors..

Kimber that sucks :( cause i so agree that his earlier works were just amazing, and his latter have just dropped, that's why i hardly ever read him anymore. but i was hoping the latest one you got would be good. Poop.

John I wish I had read your review before I bought it, it was spot on.

Shannon yep! I just finished the book this afternoon and was SO disappointed in the ending!!!

Claire Grasse I think the last decade of his work has been disappointing. This book was (as I said in my review) The Firm, reworked. Very disappointing.

Kirsten I felt the same way about this book. I don't think that I have felt this disappointed in the ending of a book in a long time. :(

Todd I whole-heartedly agree with your assesment. I used to LOVE reading his books and had reserved this from the library in December. I just picked it up on Monday and was really excited. Decent buildup that kept me wanting more. Unfortunately it was a very anti-climactic ending that also left me wanting more.

I have to agree with Kirsten and say that I too haven't felt this disappointed by a book's ending in a long time (if ever?), and never would have expected to get that feeling from a Grisham novel.

Zorana i totally agree. i just finished it and was so disappointed.

Christine I stayed up until 2 am last night to finish this because I knew there just had to be some great twist at the end to reward me for my staying with him. I finished and thought - HEY, NO FAIR!!!

Your review is right on. Color me an indigo shade of bummed.

Jennifer Yeah, I felt cheated, too. I really wanted some more closure at the end. I willingly suspended my disbelief for the entire novel and was disappointed by the lame ending.

Robert You are spot on Madame Reviewer, great build up until Mr. Grisham got bored with writing this story. With about 150 pages to go you begin to wonder how he can wrap everything up as the back page looms. The author solves this problem by yanking the bow until it collapses. Due dates gettin' ya down, John?

Zietta I agree. The character developed fully by the end of the book, but this is not a personal drama! This is a legal drama. I was screaming for more! The loose ends were swept under the rug...and the bad guys got away! That is not how it works! Also, at one stage thought the bade guys were Kyle cracking and seeing things...that would have been a better ending! :-(

Doug Totally agree. It was my first John Grisham book, and I've heard so much good things about him. Took 25 chapters just to really start the book!

Karim Pabani I couldn't agree more.

Siti Rahmah Different version of the firm. I almost quit but still managed to finish it. But very disappointed.

message 17: by Lynn (new) - added it

Lynn Agree with Stephanie, very disappointing ending, as if several chapters were missing.
