** spoiler alert ** I stopped reading here because I think Elric became negative. Because of that, by this book he lost both one of his swords and control of part/much of his kingdom, and IIRC he killed his even more negative cousin and probably did other relatively pointless mayhem. I think he had other options, and some readers call him an anti-hero, which he certainly is by this book if not the end of the 1st, and to me he is basically the same as a villain: I think he was a tyrant. Maybe he is tragic in the end, which theoretically would be considered one of the best kinds of stories--if he is a tragic hero, which I cannot see happening.
