This book is the final conclusion to "The Giver Quartet" and is my second favorite of all the books (The Giver being my favorite). Some spoilers coming...

It is wonderful in that it connects all the characters and places in the first three books and creates such a new, wonderful and poignant character in Claire. Some parts of these books seem repetitive of the first three books - but it's because you're seeing them through a new set of eyes and this is okay because it gives a new perspective to past events. This book was written in three parts, and the first part is fascinating, the second is softer and slower paced but sweet, and the last ... I am not sure what to say about that. The parts involving Jonas and Kira were touching, Claire's story is selfless, but Gabe - well he never really gets fleshed out and it's hard to feel much for him. So when the final scenes came I didn't really care HOW he resolved things (Does he live? Does he die? Does something horrible happen to him?) only that it worked out for the rest of the characters in the book (although to be clear, I didn't WANT bad things to happen to him).

I am making it sound like I didn't like the book, but I did! It's just it's not *quite* as good as "The Giver" and some things are just a little to0 pat, and somethings answered which would have been better left for me to ponder...
