I learned a lesson about the "bargain table" at big bookstores through this book. I was delighted when I found this one on such a table for about $5, because I love Zadie Smith, but after reading it, realized why it was there. It isn't a bad story, but the themes have been re-cycled from White Teeth and characters aren't formed completely and thus, are only shadows of the ones in her other books. Lesson learned: if a new book by a talented current author is there and on sale for less than $6, it's probably not worth buying. Even on sale.
Obviously this isn't a hard-and-fast rule, but I'll be hesistant the next time I walk by the table and see one of my favorite authors lying next to "Cooking with Walter Cronkite" or "Flowers from the Sahara."
