I wanted to like this but found it thin and confusing. It is set in 3 different villages in the same world and in the same time period, but one is contemporary, high-tech, futuristic (haven't read The Giver but understand that this is its setting); the next is primitive Nordic; the third is more like 18th-c England, seemingly pre- technology.

The characters did not engage me: Claire, the birthmother, is bland; Gabe, her son, equally so. I read this book because I was drawn to the notion that Lowry was working out her own grief over the loss of her son (an Air Force pilot killed on active duty) through this story of a mother seeking to reunite with the son taken from her at birth, but I did not find much emotional depth here.

The Trademaster theme just sort of added a new layer of puzzlement and dissatisfaction...we are now into the paranormal?

Not my kind of book - too YA, too undeveloped in its fantasy and supernatural elements to convince.
