Yeah, there's an image of a dog on the cover, but that's not representative of the "strays" that Koertge is writing about here. The hero of the story has a pretty chaotic past and, through no fault of his own, he winds up in the foster care system. It's not the usual horror story of foster care, though. The story is more about being different and slowly, tentatively finding a way to preserve that difference without making yourself a target or a complete anti-social weirdo. I really liked the author's respectful attitude toward the misfits that make life interesting.
