I thought the story was a little slow to get started but once the mystery was established -- who killed Stephen Cooper and why -- the pace of the book did improve. The setting, City of York during the seige of 1644, was clearly protrayed by the author -- crowded, smelly, and not very clean. Sometimes, it did seem clues should be obvious to Lady Bridget; but we've had a steady diet of NCIS for over a decade.

If historical fiction interests you, you'll enjoy this book.
