I was a little reluctant to read a rehashing of the classic Holmes and Watson duo, but no one could have been better suited to the task than Caleb Carr. While the story itself was mediocre-- as I always felt Conan Doyle's were, at the heart of things-- the characterizations were fantastic. That was always the draw of Doyle's works, and Carr manages to keep that feeling very much alive in this 'borrowing' of two classic characters. Also an homage to the ensemble casts of Carr's other historical detective works, this is an extremely enjoyable read.
