The book gave me a better appreciation of what's happening in Afghanistan. Its characters come alive, beautiful and tangible in their limitations if not in their simplicity. In the face of evil that human shortcomings and limitations bring (ethnic prejudices, religious intolerance, violence, etc.), Hosseini manages to tell a moving story of two boys coming of age to discover the cruelties of life. With a note of hope for all of us, one of them is gifted the chance to set things right, just as we all do as life unfolds each moment!
