I’m not an American, I’m a citizen of The Confederate States of America, which has been under military occupation for the past hundred thirty years.—resident of South Carolina

A book stuffed full of jaw dropping quotes, anecdotes and factoids. Tony Horitz finds history shockingly alive on the streets, old battlegrounds, cemeteries, and in the hearts and minds of veterans’ relatives, hardcore reenactors, and the many Southerners who he speaks with.

The rebel flag still flies on pick-up trucks and living room walls...to the pride of some and chagrin of others.

Southerners are very strange about that war.—Shelby Foote
