Call me unsophisticated or a Philistine, but I felt chained to this book the entire time I read it. I know that it has won tons of awards. I know that Margaret Atwood is an esteemed, talented writer, but I hated every character in this book. I thought Iris and Laura were just as spoiled, naive, and selfish as the other characters did.

The "surprise" revelations in the last few pages did make me feel a bit sorry for Iris, but I wasn't surprised...

Where was the growth? Did anyone grow from their experiences in this book or just die?

Having to read this for my book club, I remember why my students hate being forced to read a book that is "good for you."
