The author's story is remarkable -- she was a Ukrainian-born Jew who was deported to Auschwitz just months after finishing the novel -- and that accounted for all the buzz the novel got a year or two ago. The book itself is good, though it sometimes reads a very extended feuilleton. It offers a thought-provoking portrait of the French under German occupation in the early 1940s, and a sometimes encouraging, sometimes dispiriting depiction of human nature in war.
