Shorty is a teenager growing up in the slums in Haiti. Life is tough in the Site and he's grown up tough. He's been shot and is in the hospital when the earthquake hits and collapses the building around him. This book is made up of his thoughts while he is in complete darkness in the rubble of the hospital trying desperately to think of something other than his need for water. He thinks of how he ended up in the life he is in. He also dreams of Toussaint l'Ouverture, a slave who was a revolutionary leader in Haiti 200 years before.
This book documents the way in which Shorty lives as well as the history of Haiti. Both stories are filled with violence. This book is interesting both as a look at Haiti's history, but also as a look at how people change to fit into their environments.
