I think this is an important book, I'm glad it's out there for a YA audience. The verse format was an interesting choice. On one hand, I appreciated the way the writing shaped the story; it felt spare, which contributed to the mood and themes of the story. On the other hand, the same spareness created a relatively simplistic narrative and some one-dimensional characterizations in a very complicated story based on real events; dozens of different women's real lives and deaths spanning decades. I think prose could have made a better, more nuanced telling.
