One of my biggest problems with modern horror or sci-fi is the way so much of it skimps on atmosphere and world-building in order to jump right into the scares. Too little time is spent learning about the fantastical world you find yourself immersed in, just on the monsters chasing you through it. This book is the complete opposite. Like a sociology textbook of the damned, it ponders every aspect of a world where the dead have risen, from government and military responses and the inevitable social upheaval of a collapsed civilization to science, religion, morality and technology, told through personal accounts from every corner of the globe. It weaves a fascinating web from the fragile strands of our interconnected planet, then lets us watch as zombies rip it to shreds.

Some of the political stuff is a bit blatant as satire and the characters often have very little differentiating one from another. As compelling as the stories are, I often lost track of which narrator was speaking. Anyone looking for thrilling action might be disappointed, but it fully succeeds as a thoughtful, dread-soaked "what if" scenario unlike anything I've seen before.
