The strongest new offering from Vertigo in years also happens to be the first in a long while to play in the same headspace as Sandman. Coincidence?

The overall plot for these first few issues grabbed me just enough to hold my interest, but the diversions it takes when telling the short story-within-the-story asides have produced some outstanding moments of horror I'd stand alongside the best Vertigo has ever produced. It worries me that later issues haven't been as solid, downplaying the stories in order to focus on the much less interesting escape plan, but this initial volume is good stuff.
