Okay, hear me out.

I don't think Palahniuk is a very efficient or prolific writer. I don't consider him a grand wordsmith. He's less like Annie Proulx and David Foster Wallace; he's more like Stephen King and JK Rowling. He understand the logical equation of a story, but not the heart and bone and marrow of the thing.

but with Fight Club, he accidentally wrote a brilliant book, because it's not the focus that is ultimately the most fascinating. It's the peripheral, the unmentioned that ends up most captivating. It is the empty little grey spaces here and there that make this book so very fun and put it a step above simple popcorn.
