I really love the Elvis Cole series by Robert Crais. It's an LA based PI series. I grab them as eagerly as I do a James Lee Burke, or a Michael Connelly. I think his character development is some of the best out there.

A word of warning, though. Robert Crais writes other books that aren't in the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike series, and I don't like them as much. I think it's because although the characters are really well developed, they aren't always likeable.

In this book, Elvis's girlfriend's son is kidnapped while in Elvis's care. The narration switches from the child to Elvis to Joe. It's a page turner. These books have a little more weight to their stories than, say, the Jack Reacher books, but are still an easy read.
