This book was written by someone possessing a basic familiarity with the original quartet and who has also been very influenced by the tv show. Small details like the quince tree at Elena's house coexist with tv!memories of Elena dumping Matt *before* she meets Stefan. Stefan now wears a sapphire ring, and I don't think either lapis lazuli or vervain were mentioned once. Meredith gets a third last name in this one, so you can take your pick: Meredith Sulez, level-headed, elegantly eyebrowed sarcasm machine; Meredith Fell, doctor with an ethically challenging healing method; or Meredith Suarez, who uses her fighting stave for breaking and entering (whatever happened to using a nail file?)

These characters are undignified cartoon versions of their former selves. Everyone is crying or whining all the time, which is actually part of the plot. *grumble*
