A novella is a curious compromise between the short story and the novel. It is long enough to give a plot some room to twist around and breathe a bit, but not so long that two or three plots can comfortably sit together in it. In this case, Hearne managed a meandering prelude and a story-within-a-story. It just barely fit, but I did enjoy it, and I appreciated the fact that Oberon the wolfhound got in some wisecracks at the beginning. Mostly, though, I'm looking forward to reading the next novel.
