While I was reading this book, I didn't realize at the time that the events were based upon true history. But the book so captivated me that I did a search when I was through for the various events and thus found that it was in fact a "sort of" true story.

Back in 1845, HMS Erabus and HMS Terror embarked on a mission to find the northwest passage in the arctic to connect the atlantic and pacific oceans. Unfortunately the ships attempted a route that was too late in the fall season and they consequently were stuck in ice that never thawed enough to let the ships out (for 3 years!). Plagued by scurvy and just bitter winter cold, they decided to abandon the ailing ships and make a trek to land where they might be rescued. According to history, every one of the men perished and were never heard from again. However, this book adds the author's fictional interpretation of what might have happened instead. And it's good. Really good. It's suspenseful, educational and entertaining, and I wish it would have continued on! I hate when good books end!
