it was amazing

I first read this with the Arthur Szyk illustrations and it left an indelible impression. Forget the Disney versions; these stories are sad and darkly beautiful. Anderson was a dour Christian for whom the spiritual dimension was always more important than any earthly disappointment. Outside of that context, the Little Mermaid, the Girl Who Trod on a Loaf and the others make no sense. There are very few traditional happy endings here. I didn't understand this as a child but I loved the stories anyway.
