A lot of what Jackson states was obvious to me, largely because it was written 20 years ago and largely because I've so devoted myself to urban studies and geography. But Jackson writes beautifully, and, in the tradition of John McPhee, Michael Pollan, and so on, he makes what has historically been a specialist's discipline so transparent to the layman, and that is pretty damn valuable.
