I'm glad that I heard about Temple Grandin on NPR and had a chance to read this book, and also that I didn't read the reviews here or on Amazon before checking it out of the library because I might not have. The negative reviews about Grandin venturing into subject areas where she's only qualified to speculate are not off the mark. She does, and its obvious when she leaves her expertise.

However, this book is worth reading just for Chapter 5 on Pain and Suffering, in fact I would suggest reading just that even if you dislike the rest of the book. Especially if you are already thinking about the human condition. Following Grandin into the world of animal suffering and the mind's reaction to it will broaden your understanding on the nature of pain and fear to animals and humans alike.
