I'm not sure why I want to read about people's problematic lives even after I go home from work....But I do find that reading about the lives of incarcerated women helps me to have more effectively compassion for the parents of the children I work with. It is a valuable lesson to learn again and again, that the perpetrators were almost always at one time victims. This book is surprisingly well written, considering it is written by mostly inexperienced writers. It is meaningful, heartfelt, and moving. It is not emotionally easy to take, but for someone like me, whose career involves other people's constant crises, it is a great read.
