After twenty pages I regretted ever starting this book. After one hundred pages I got depressed knowing that I had about 400-500 pages (I can't remember the exact number.) left. You see, I had just finished Maguire's WICKED. I had just finished bathing in Maguire's fountain of symbolism and metaphor, only to be rudely interrupted (by choice...I know...I can't blame Meyer.) by a confused little girl and her vampire-werewolf love triangle--a dialogue and plot-driven triangle that seems to forget that the English language can be manipulated in creative ways. Although I did mildly enjoy the "I am Switzerland" paragraph.

The story became interesting at around page 300. Meyer held my interest until the end. But as many have said, these are books written for teenage girls. Only teenage girls understand Bella. I do not understand Bella. I am not a teenage girl.

The other day someone pointed out that the only attempt Meyer makes at characterizing Bella as intelligent is by mentioning that she reads classic literature. I think I agree. She makes some of the dumbest decisions--decisions that seem to have no real rational basis other than to help Meyer place characters in certain settings so that stuff can happen how she planned it in her head.

I finished this book because ... 1) I am OCD in that fact that it would bother me to leave a book unfinished ... 2) I would feel like I was neglecting my job as a high school English teacher if I ignored this series ... and 3) I really do want to know what happens next. I plan to read BREAKING DAWN soon, but first I need some beef ribs before I wade through 700 more pages of Similac.
